After more than a decade of working with clients in Portsmouth, NH, I can tell you that the biggest obstacle to people getting help isn’t skepticism about whether hypnosis works – it’s misinformation about what hypnosis actually is.

So let’s clear the air. Here are the seven most common myths I hear, and the truth behind each one.

Myth 1: “I Don’t Think I Can Be Hypnotized”

Myth 2: “It’s Just Placebo”

This one is worth unpacking – because even if it were true, it would be missing something profound.

Why does a sugar pill make people feel better? At some level – consciously or unconsciously – the person made a decision to feel better. And they did.

The placebo effect isn’t a trick. It’s evidence of the extraordinary power of the inner mind. If anything, it supports the premise of hypnosis rather than undermining it. So does hypnosis work for real people in real life? Yes it does.

Myth 3: “Hypnosis Is Mind Control”

This concern comes up often – and it’s completely understandable given how hypnosis has been portrayed in movies and on stage. So let me put your mind at ease.

Hypnosis is a collaborative process. You remain aware and in control throughout the entire session – you can hear everything, respond selectively, and bring yourself back to full alertness at any moment. Nothing happens without your willing participation.

Think of it this way: if you came to me wanting to quit smoking, your subconscious isn’t suddenly going to agree to give up everything else you enjoy too. Your inner mind only accepts what genuinely aligns with your own goals and values. A suggestion that doesn’t feel right simply won’t take hold.

All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. My role is to guide you into a relaxed, receptive state – but you’re the one doing the real work. The changes that happen in our sessions come from you, not from anything I impose on you. If anything, this work is about giving you more control over your own mind, not less.

Myth 4: “It’s a Truth Serum – I Might Say Something Embarrassing”

Think of it less like unconsciousness and more like a deeply focused, relaxed conversation with your own inner mind – one where you’re an active and willing participant, not a passive subject.

Myth 5: “Does Hypnosis Work?”

Yes – with an honest caveat.

The research on hypnosis is compelling across a wide range of applications: smoking cessation, chronic pain, stress, emotional eating, performance, and more. Results do vary across individuals and situations, and I won’t pretend otherwise.

One nuance worth understanding: large-scale studies on hypnosis often use standardized scripts delivered to broad populations. But hypnosis thrives on personalization. A session tailored specifically to you – your history, your language, your imagery, your goals – will almost always outperform a standardized approach.

So does hypnosis work for real people with real challenges? What I can tell you from over a decade of client work is this: the people who show up open and willing consistently surprise themselves. Like the client who had spent years trying to overcome a paralyzing fear of flying – canceling trips to sporting events at the last minute, watching dream vacations pass him by. He came to me skeptical, having tried everything. After our first session, he booked a flight to Florida. After our second, a flight to Paris for the vacation he’d always wanted. I haven’t seen him since – which, in this work, is the best possible outcome.

Or the client who had spent 30 years in a job that no longer fit him – a lifelong meditator and self-help reader who felt he’d lost his spark. Myth 7: “Hypnosis Puts New Beliefs Into Your Head”

Does hypnosis work by adding new beliefs on top of old ones? This is perhaps the most important myth to address – because it gets at something fundamental about what this work actually is.

Hypnosis, as I practice it, isn’t about layering new beliefs on top of old ones. It’s about removing the ones that were never true in the first place.

Most of us grew up in an environment that shaped our beliefs in ways we didn’t choose and couldn’t fully see. As children, we absorbed the nervous systems, expectations, philosophies, and self-talk of the people who raised us. Without realizing it, we took on beliefs like “staying small is safe,” or “I’m not the kind of person who succeeds,” or “my needs aren’t important” – and those beliefs have been quietly running in the background ever since.

What I think of as consulting hypnosis is really de-hypnosis – helping you untangle from the limiting narratives and worst-case thinking patterns that have been mistaken for truth. We’re not adding a new story. We’re dissolving the old one that was never really yours to begin with.

When those old patterns loosen, what remains isn’t something I put there. It’s the calmer, clearer, more resourceful version of you that was always underneath.
